Now let’s get to some of the dresser decor tips I covered in the video! And if you want to see my whole dresser decorating process in action, be sure to watch the video to see it all unfold!
Dresser Decor Tip #1:
Lay it all out there
I really like to lay all my decor options out so they’re really visible. Then I can start visualizing what can go where on what I'm decorating the dresser.
I highly recommend laying everything out, or at least almost everything. There's always room for grabbing other pieces in your apartment or shopping for more decor. But I find having all my options laid out in front of me is just very helpful, as it makes it easier to start getting ideas based on what I already have!
Before we dive in further, I wanted to let you know that you can now watch my free workshop, "Decorate Your Dream Apartment Without Spending Money on the Wrong Decor For You" whenever you want!

Dresser Decor Tip #2:
Start grabbing stuff without thinking too hard about it
When you start decorating your dresser, it's not about achieving perfection immediately. It's more about grabbing the things that will help tell the visual story that you are trying to tell, without overthinking it.
As I decorate my dresser, it really just starts with grabbing the things that fit the aesthetic that I'm going for, and simply placing them where I think they possibly could go.
And once I have the items I think I might want to use placed on the dresser, I'll start tweaking and make it so that it looks cohesive and aesthetically pleasing.
Basically, don’t put pressure on yourself to make it look perfect the second you start putting things on your dresser!
Dresser Decor Tip #3:
Layer it up & avoid straight lines
One thing you'll see me do in the video is layering the decor pieces. I want each piece to feel like it’s part of the overall visual story, and layering - or making it so the items overlap with each other - creates more visual interest.
So when you’re decorating your dresser, try to avoid simply placing items beside each other. We want to stay away from creating straight lines. Instead, place items in front of and behind one another - layering them on top of each other - to make your dresser styling feel more interesting and multidimensional!
Dresser Decor Tip #4:
Play with height
A great way to make your dresser decor more visually interesting and eye-catching is to use pieces that vary in height.
When every piece of decor on a dresser is the same height, it tends to fall flat. But when you make sure there’s a variety of height, it’s so much more interesting to the eye!
Below is a visual of what I mean. See how the heights of the items vary and create kind of a zig-zag? That’s what you want.
Dresser Decor Tip #5:
You can always edit & simplify
Remember what I said about not achieving perfection right away? After grabbing decor items and placing them on your dresser without overthinking it, this is where you have total freedom to edit and simplify.
Play around with your decor! Take something away if it’s looking too cluttered, or add something if a spot is looking kind of empty.
This is supposed to be a fun experiment. Go with the flow, move things around, and simply stop when things finally feel right!
Dresser Decor Tip #6:
To create cohesiveness, look for similarities among your decor
This is another reason why laying all your decor out so you can easily see all your options comes in handy; it makes it so you can spot similarities among your decor.
Look for similar colors, similar subject matter, similar materials… then make your selections based on those similarities. This makes it so much easier to create a cohesive picture with your styling, rather than a cluttered hodgepodge.
For example, as you can see in Look #2, we have the repeated pops of pink that are in harmony with each other:
Anytime you can repeat color, that is always a great way to create a cohesive look. When in doubt, just use one color and repeat it a lot.
Repetition is the key to cohesiveness, so use it to your advantage!
Dresser Decor Tip #8:
Incorporate the things you love!
As far as I’m concerned, this is probably the most important tip I can give. As you decorate your dresser - or anything for that matter - always actively try to find ways to incorporate your interests, passions, and personality into your decor.
As you can see in look #2 pictured above, an example of this is my use of the Jose Gonzales poster. I’m a huge Jose Gonzales fan, and we got this posted when we saw him perform a few months ago. So using this poster not only conveys my love for his music, but it conjures a specific memory.
Think about how you can incorporate what you love in your decorating, always!
All right, those were my dresser decor tips based on styling my own dresser in three different looks!
